Website Blocking Search Engines

Some WordPress plugins will alert you to a “serious SEO issue” if you are blocking Search engine access to your website and you may need to allow search engines access. Similarly, there may be times when you don’t want search engines to access your website.

Luckily in WordPress there is a simple “Discourage Search Engines” Setting.

Login to your WordPress Website

  • Activate or Deactivate Search Engine Access

    • Navigate to Settings > Reading
    • Check or uncheck the tick box next to "Discourage Search Engines" - uncheck this if you want to allow search engines to crawl your website and check it if you don;t want search engines to access your website
    • Click Save
    Important note
    Although most reputable search engines will respect this setting, this is only a recommendation to search engines which can be ignored. If you are trying to hide your website, there are other steps you can take for this. Please contact us for assistance.
