Someone in China wants to register a variant of my domain name

We regularly see emails originating from China, claiming to be a Chinese domain registry who has received a request to register a variant of your website domain name. The email may take a form similar to this:

Subject: CN Domain and keyword

“(It’s very urgent, please transfer this email to your CEO. Thanks)

We are the domain name registration service company in China. On Dec 30, 2015, we received an application from Huaxun Holdings Ltd requested “XXXXXX” as their internet keyword and China (CN) domain names. But after checking it, we find this name conflict with your company name or trademark. In order to deal with this matter better, it’s necessary to send email to you and confirm whether this company is your distributor or business partner in China?

Kind regards

We have also seen the following variant

Dear Principal,

I'm Daniel Yan from HK TLD Creating Limited.

The domains "watchthedot.cn/.asia..." you registered with us had been expired, would you like to renew them ?

If we don't renew in time, these domains will be available for re-registration by anyone. If you choose to renew, we will send you the renewal price/documents and arrange the next step for you in time.

Since this matter is very urgent and important. I hope you give me a reply asap.

This is a scam that you can safely ignore.

How does the Scam work?

It's quite simple. First ask yourself the following question Have you ever visited a website with a Chinese domain name? Do you need a Chinese domain name? Do you need one bad enough to spend £250? In my view, it's just a way of selling you an overpriced of domain you neither want nor need. You can safely ignore these messages
